The Councillor for Family, Mª Carmen Portugal, presented on 4 December the first report entitled “ Portrait of the Families of Orihuela 2024 ” which reflects detailed information on the families of the municipality, which represents “ a fundamental tool for making political decisions , planning public services and creating initiatives that promote development and family cohesion ” , stated the Councillor for Family.
This is the first study carried out by the Council together with the Family Observatory of the City of Orihuela, which provides a detailed and updated view of the reality of families in the municipality, which is structured into five large blocks: socio-demographic context , family structure, socioeconomic conditions of families, challenges and vulnerabilities of households and family dynamism and intergenerational relationships.
The analysis carried out previously seeks to identify the main needs and challenges faced by families in the municipality of Orihuela, in addition to offering opportunities to improve their well-being and quality of life. Among the most relevant data in the report is the 16% drop in the birth rate in the municipality , a phenomenon that affects both the workplace and educational services aimed at early childhood, especially in the age range of 0 to 3 years .
For his side, Manuel Mestre, First Deputy Mayor of Orihuela, stressed the essential role of families, “ it is a fundamental pillar of society. If we improve the family in all its aspects, we will improve the society in which we live , ” he said. In addition , he valued the work of the Family Council and highlighted the importance of this report to guide family policies , “ this report is one of the extraordinary works that will provide us with key data to improve the lives of families in Orihuela .”
The report was presented at an event held at the Mar í a Moliner Library in Orihuela, organised by the Department of Family. The event was attended by members of the Family Observatory of the City of Orihuela and three prominent speakers, Mr. Ascensio Pérez , president of ACMO, Mr. Miguel Ángel Martí , member of the Vega Baja of the Governing Board of the Territorial College of Architects of Alicante (CTAA) and Mr. Alfonso Carlos Aliaga, judge of the Court of First Instance No. 2 of Orihuela.
During their presentations, the speakers analysed the data collected in the report and provided their professional vision on the implications and challenges faced by families in the municipality.
The Family Observatory of the City of Orihuela continues to work on developing studies that allow for a deeper understanding of the needs of families in the municipality. These investigations are carried out in collaboration with various local associations and institutions, consolidating the Observatory as a space for dialogue and meeting to create public policies on family matters based on concrete and real data.
