Palmela municipality, with a population of 68.879 habitants, has an area of 465 km2 and is the largest of 18 municipalities from the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Parts of its territory includes two of the most important national protected areas, the Arrábida Natural Park and the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve.
Administratively, each parish has a strong personality: Palmela, county seat, with more than 1.000 years of History; Pinhal Novo, the most dynamic urban center; Quinta do Anjo, with its beautiful natural heritage, alongside a strong automotive industrial cluster; Poceirão and Marateca, the most extensive and predominantly rural, with a typically dispersed population pattern.
