Known as the “Heart of Andalucía” due to its strategic location at the crossroads of the region, Antequera is situated approximately one hour from the main capital cities of Andalucía. The town is only a short distance from Málaga, the international airport, and the sun-soaked beaches of the Costa del Sol. This prime location is one of the reasons Antequera is included in numerous tour programmes across Andalucía.
Among the town’s most distinguished landmarks is the Dolmens of Antequera Archaeological Ensemble, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016. This remarkable site comprises the dolmens of Menga, Viera, and El Romeral, as well as the natural landmarks of El Torcal de Antequera and Peña de los Enamorados (Lovers’ Rock). Equally noteworthy are the many Roman ruins and villas, with the celebrated Efebo statue standing out as a fine example. The Alcazaba Fortress, the Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, and the Church of El Carmen, known for their Baroque architecture, along with the town’s historic palace-houses and the newly renovated Antequera Museum (MVCA) located in the heart of the town, further contribute to its rich cultural heritage.
In addition to its monumental attractions, Antequera boasts an array of natural wonders. The fertile plains of the Vega, the dramatic Caminito del Rey—a pathway constructed along the cliffs of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge—and the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, home to the largest colony of pink flamingos in the Iberian Peninsula, are just a few examples of the region’s breathtaking landscapes.
