The Municipality of Angra do Heroísmo has an area of 239 km² and 33,799 inhabitants and is subdivided into 19 parishes.
The municipality is limited to the northeast by the municipality of Praia da Vitória, being bathed by the Atlantic Ocean in all other directions. The city is the historic capital of the Azores and seat of the diocese of Angra, which includes the entire archipelago.
The richness of its history and built heritage led to the Central Area of the City of Angra do Heroísmo being classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 7, 1983. The city is home to the Garrison Regiment n.º 1, one of the most former Portuguese military units.
