Best Practices

The Municipality of Angra do Heroísmo developed the project Tourist in Your Land, in partnership with the company Terceira Tours, a program that aims the active aging, enabling all the elderly who participate in the activities, the awakening of physical, emotional, mental and social skills. The project Tourist in Your Land, will enable all the participants of the day care centers/ nursing homes of the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, a unique way to explore their island, discovering or rediscovering places, landscapes, people and traditions:

Tour 1: Half-day in our forest reserves This is a tour where we can enjoy some of our best forest reserves.

Places to visit:

•  Monte Brasil with explanation about its formation and historical importance.
• Serreta forest reserve where we can visit and enjoy one of the most beautiful places of our island.
•  Lagoa da Falca, we will stop for an outdoor activity and a snack.

Route 2: Half day at the best viewpoints With enviable views, Terceira Island has viewpoints and breathtaking landscapes.

Places to visit:

•  Serra da Ribeirinha with a magnificent view of the Ilhéus das Cabras,
• Serra do Cume with a view to the largest crater of the Azores and the famous “Manta de Retalhos”.
• Miradouro do Facho viewpoint where we can see the beautiful Praia da Vitória.

Route 3: Half day with our people Nothing better than spending a morning or afternoon learning a little more about the best we have to offer.

Places to visit:

• Ricardo Simas’ pottery, the only representative of Terceira’s traditional pottery with more than 28 years of experience in this art and with the right to a demonstration by him.
• Coffee plantation of the producer José de São Bento. We visited and got to know a new trend in the Azores that will put Terceira Island even more on the world map. We talk about coffee. Few people know, but the Azores are, together with the Canary Islands, the only coffee producers in Europe. Coffee and liquor tasting included (for those who can’t drink coffee and/or liquors, there is water and juice)
• Visit to Açorbordados

Route 4 ¬- Half day in the city of Angra do Heroísmo We get to know the city of Angra do Hero on foot.

Places to visit:

• Pátio da Alfândega
• where we explain the importance and history of our bay, the pier and the church of Misericórdia – Old Square and Angra do Heroísmo Town Hall
• Jardim Duque da Terceira (Duke of Terceira Garden) – with some free time to stroll around (while we prepare an activity)
• Cathedral Church – O Forno” pastry shop with the right to a “queijada” and juice or water.

Route 5 – Half day in Angra do Heroísmo II Tour takes us to discover a little more about the history of Angra do Heroísmo.

Places to visit:

• Monte Brasil -Walking tour – explaining all its history
•  Relvão – Walking tour – explaining Gungunhana
